Leo Lee ：Stoba Sondermaschinen GmbH is part of the stoba Group. The stoba Group consists of 5 companies stoba PRECISION, which are located all around the world to manufacture high precision metallic components. Another member of the stoba Group is stoba e-SYSTEM, a company, which is more future oriented and therefore develops and manufactures electrical drive systems for special applications.

Last but not least, there is the stoba Sondermaschinen GmbH or stoba CUSTOMIZED MACHINERY (CM) which is manufacturer of machine tools where electrochemical metal removal processes or laser metal removal processes are used to machine, deburr, structure and surface finish metal components.

After founding, the business unit stoba CM, was machine and process supplier for stoba Precision (PT). stoba PT has always worked closely with their customers in the development of new or special production processes of workpieces as e. g. parts used in Diesel and Gasoline injection, stoba CM has supplied stoba PT with process technologies and related machines and equipment to produce these new parts with high and very high production rates. After years of stable and high-yield operation in PT plant, CM equipment are gradually be favored by other customers and other suppliers of customers.
What is the market share of your company? What is your core competitiveness?
Leo Lee ：The electrochemical machining processes ECM carry out operations burr-free, cold, with no contact of tool and parts, stressless and fast.The very competitiveness of the process is, that operations can be carried out internally of workpieces fast, with a quality that no other process can provide and economically efficient. The other competitive characteristic is that the machine can process several components simultaneously.
The ECM-Process is capable to machine all kinds of electrically conductive metals. It removes soft or hardened steel with the same effectiveness and without difference in tool wear. Even tough material as used in aircraft engine business or medical implants can be machined without a difference to soft steel.
Manufacturing processes internally of workpieces are -electrochemical deburring, to remove burr at edges of intersecting holes inside the component. The electrochemical deburring process removes safely, reliable and fast all burrs of a workpiece. The process is normally performed in a way that in later use of the workpiece no burr will brake of, no micro-burrs or secondary burrs will brake of and damage the workpiece and component.
Electrochemical radiusing or chamfering of edges. This is the next step to use ECM to form edges. Following to electrochemical deburring, more material at edges is removed to form the required shape of the edge. Additionally, to electrochemical deburring the electrochemical radiusing process is required to shape and finish the surface of edges as it is required to use the component in hydraulic devices used for very high hydraulic pressure as required in Diesel and Gasoline Injection.
Electrochemical shaping is a manufacturing process to manufacture 3D-Cavities inside of workpieces with precise geometry and finished surfaces. Of course, this process works burr-free.
No other process can machine workpieces internally with the quality as electrochemical machining ECM can do.
Eectrochemical machining ECM and precisely electrochemical machining PECM. Both processes are used to produce 3D shapes electrochemicaly.
What are the features of your major products or services? Which areas do you focus on?
Leo Lee ：For our customers the ECM process is sometime difficult to handle. In order to assist our customers, stoba CM has developed fully automized machines cells where the customer can feed raw workpieces in and take machined, cleaned, rust protected and dried workpieces out.
All process steps as e. g. pre-cleaning process, ECM process, post cleaning process, passivation process and drying process are operated by the automation system, designed and manufactured by stoba CM according to customer’s requirements.
What is your company’s operation model? What distinguishes your model from others’? How is it operating now?
Leo Lee ：Special business of our customers has formed all stoba business units to very flexible units. If end customers need parts quickly, our colleagues from stoba PT have to act quickly as well.
If it is required to modify their machines or fixtures stoba CM is ready to design, manufacture and install required modifications of machines and fixture. All stoba business units work closely together and share experience over a long time with other units in their daily business. This “long-time-experience” is permanently introduced to machines and processes, which are ready to be sold to other customers. All customers can be sure that each machine and process, that leaves the factory of stoba CM has latest technology and know-how integrated.
Especially if the ECM machine or ECM process is used in very high production cases long-time-experience makes machine and process robust and reliable. There is no other company on the market which has the same opportunities as companies of the stoba Group.
With the development of modern industry and continuously improving requirements, what changes in application requirements are emerging in the market? Which aspect do clients want to improve and upgrade? How do we deal with it?
Leo Lee ：Since the main business of the stoba Group is to provide components used in combustion drive systems, this future change to electric drive systems is one of the challenges of the stoba Group. However, already years ago stoba has started to prepare for the change. Under the guidance of the stoba Group stoba e-Systems was founded, other markets have be approached e. g. aircraft, medical, civil etc. and machines with process solutions have been supplied to customers outside of the automotive industries.
Goal of the stoba Group is also to protect jobs of about 1.100 employees who work mostly in the production of combustion powered engines? In order to protect their job stoba has proactively investigated other applications, which have similar requirements and characteristics. Here we found applications in aircraft engine business, medical implants, civil industries etc. Additionally the fact that beside electrical drive systems other drive systems as e.g. hydrogen drive systems are still in development stoba has good opportunities to serve this market with machines and process technology.
How has the pandemic impacted and changed the industrial chain both at home and abroad from the sudden outbreak to today’s standardized prevention and control?
Leo Lee ：The pandemic impact to stoba’s business is strong. All customers started immediately to purchase more conservatively. Projects for large aircrafts, which were very close to be purchased broke away on one side. On the other side we were able to enter new markets and compensate that what broke away. The next challenge is now to delivery time. All sub-suppliers increased delivery time. Especially for those items which are related to electronic chips industries and normally are delivered from Chinese manufacturers.
What is the industry pain point today? What are new opportunities? What is the core competitiveness in the future?
Leo Lee ：Delivery time. The pandemic has shown everybody that global industry has to be questioned. Especially the raw material purchased under the long delivery condition.
Are your company researching and developing new technology or new project? What is your company’s future strategy and goal?
Leo Lee ：The stoba Group and every business unit of stoba works on development and research. This however, is information that should not be disclosed now.
Please share your expectation of the future of Chinese manufacturing industry with one sentence.
Leo Lee ：It takes long time after starting business in China to get successful, however, if you have the breath to survive the ramp-up phase you will find open minded Chinese customers and huge markets.
